What I Learned Today – October 5, 2012

Taken 2

Taken 2 has less action than the first, has a thin plot, contains frenzied camerawork, includes poor representations of Muslims, and takes itself too seriously, according to one review. I enjoyed the first film, but didn’t love it as much as others seemed to. It had fun fight scenes and that was about it.

I’ll probably end up seeing Taken 2 at some point in the future, most likely on DVD. That reminds me, I need to finish watching The Grey on Netflix.

Grave Encounters 2

There’s a movie called Grave Encounters 2 that has a supposed wicked second act with some clever scares. Maybe I should see the first one first.

Will Smith as Neo

Sometimes actors turn down really great roles. And sometimes that’s the best thing that could have ever happened:

  • Matt Damon could have had his very own Avatar or half his face burned off in The Dark Knight. Hey Matt… Matt…  it’s not your fault.
  • It could have been Johnny Depp’s Day Off back in 1986 if he wanted it.
  • Leonardo DiCaprio could have had a lot more Boogie in his Nights if he’d wanted it.
  • Molly Ringwald had the chance to be a Pretty Woman or date a Ghost.
  • I wish I could tell you that Kevin Costner fought the good fight, and the Sisters let him be. I wish I could tell you that… and I can because he turned down the role of Andy Dufresne in The Shawshank Redemption.
  • It could have been Sean Connery’s voice telling the balrog, “You shall not pass!” in The Lord of the Rings as well as offering Neo the blue or red pill in The Matrix.
  • And Will Smith could have been The One that Sean Connery was offering those pills to.
  • Indiana Jones would have had a cool mustache if Tom Selleck had accepted the role.

More toys are being transformed into movies. (Transformed. Like Transformers. Get it?) Hasbro is adapting the Hungry Hungry Hippos game as an animated film for children. Adam Sandler is doing an adaptation of Candyland. And there’s a Stretch Armstrong movie in the works for a possible 2014 release. Eh.
