What I Learned Today – November 9, 2012

Until they actually announce the next director for the post George Lucas Star Wars movies, there’s going to be a lot of fun but pointless speculation and rumors. One rumored director is Matthew Vaughn. He directed Layer Cake and wrote and directed Stardust, Kick-Ass, and X-Men: First Class. I enjoyed Kick-Ass a whole lot, liked First Class, and thought Stardust was a fairly entertaining though forgettable film. He makes fun films, but he hasn’t done anything great yet, and I’m not sure I see any hints of greatness in him yet. I bet he could make a decent and fun Star Wars movie, but I doubt it will be memorable.

Also in the running is Colin Trevorrow. He directed Safety Not Guaranteed. It was a heartfelt and somewhat quirky sci-fi indie movie that came out this past summer. One of the better movies of the year. He’s definitely an unproven director, but I think he has potential. Should he be the one to tackle Star Wars Episode VII? I don’t know. What I do know is that whoever they go with, I’ll back him 100% and wish him well.

Still I hope they choose someone a little more visionary, along the lines of Chris Nolan, Ridley Scott, James Cameron, the Wachowskis, or even some smaller directors like David Fincher, Drew Goddard, or  Edgar Wright. I think all of those are long shots, but I hope they pick someone who will take the job seriously.

My teenage self would be happy to hear that a sequel to Boy Meets World is in the works. I used to watch that show religiously. It looks like this possible sequel would follow grown-up Cory, who is now a seventh grade history teacher (apparently Mr. Feeny affected him more than we ever realized), and his thirteen year old daughter.

No word yet whether Ben Savage and Danielle Fishel will reprise their roles as Cory and Topanga. My teenage self would hope so, as it would hope for Will Freidle (Cory’s brother, Eric) and Rider Strong (Cory’s bffl, Shawn) to return. And for that sake we might as well have William Daniels (Mr. Feeny!) and Matthew Lawrence (Jack Hunter, Shawn’s older half-brother) come back too!

So yeah, my teenage self would be tremendously happy to hear this. But I’m an adullt now. I’d probably tune in for nostalgia’s sake, but I don’t see that lasting more than a handful of episodes. Still, I’m two thumbs up for this move.
