MY MOVIE WISHLIST: ON THE ROAD

What’s it about? “Just after his father’s death, Sal Paradise, an aspiring New York writer, meets Dean Moriarty, a devastatingly charming ex-con, married to the very liberated and seductive Marylou. Sal and Dean bond instantly. Determined not to get locked in to a constricted life, the two friends cut their ties and take to the road with Marylou. Thirsting for freedom, the three young people head off in search of the world, of other encounters, and of themselves.” — On The Road – The Movie

Who made it? Directed by Walter Salles; written by Jose Rivera; based on the novel by Jack Kerouac.

Who’s in it? Garrett Hedlund, Sam Riley, Kristen Stewart, Kirsten Dunst, Amy Adams, Terrence Howard, Viggo Mortensen, and Steve Buscemi.

When’s it coming out? TBD 2012.

Why do I want to see it?

  • Because I love the idea of spending a life on the road.
  • Because I liked the sound of Sam Riley’s voice in the narration.
  • Because I got chills when I heard this: “The only people who interest me are the mad ones, the ones who are mad to live, mad to talk, desirous of everything at the same time, the ones never yawn or say a commonplace thing, but burn, burn, burn like Roman candles across the night.”
  • Because the idea of living a mad, burning life full of passion fills me with yearning.
  • Because even though the book wore on me at times, it resonated deeply with me at other times.
  • Because I’m curious if the adaptation will be a success.
  • Because if the movie itself can maintain the same tone and energy of the trailer, it has the potential to be a powerfully moving film.

How much do I want to see it? (On a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being I have to see this or I’ll die and 1 being Okay, I’ll see it if I have nothing better to do.) 4: I really want to see this, and I’m willing to pay good money at the theater to do so.

Where’s the trailer already?

Anything else? This: “What is that feeling when you’re driving away from people and they recede on the plain till you see their specks dispersing? — it’s the too-huge world vaulting us, and it’s good-by. But we lean forward to the next crazy venture beneath the skies.” — Jack Kerouac, “On the Road”
