Joss Whedon and Marvel Taking Relationship to Next Stage

Variety.com reports that Joss Whedon will (wait for it… wait for it…) write and direct The Avengers sequel. Not a huge surprise there given the massive success of Avengers, but still it’s good to know that the next installment will be in good hands.

Marvel and Disney (which owns Marvel) trust Joss’s hands so much that they’ve announced, “[Joss] will also contribute creatively to the next phase of Marvel’s cinematic universe.” What this means exactly is unclear, but it sounds like Joss will be helping to tie together the next slew of Marvel movies.

And if that’s not enough good news for you, Disney has also revealed that Joss will be helping to create a new live action Marvel TV series for ABC. I’m intensely curious to see what it  will be about, especially since it will presumably tie into the movies. We’ve never really seen this kind of tie-in between TV and movies before. Ron Howard wanted to try the very same thing with an adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower series, but couldn’t get the funding he needed from Universal. So it’ll be interesting to see if Disney and Marvel can pull this off. If so, maybe we’ll start to see more of this kind of TV/Movie interdependence. Exciting times!
