Tell me a story

The phrase for today is team up.

Zak Penn, the guy who wrote X-men: The Last Stand (blecht!) and The Incredible Hulk (eh), is teaming up with lead writer of The Fast and the Furious franchise (meh), Chris Morgan, to create a movie that described as “an action film in the vein of Chronicle.”

I’m not exactly excited about this story as the only good film I mentioned was Chronicle, and this is coming off like a poor imitation. Still, I wish these two guys well. If it’s halfway as good as Chronicle, I’ll give it a shot.

Mark Wahlberg and Russell Crowe are teaming up for a film noir thriller called Broken City. It’s directed by Allen Hughes of The Hughes Brothers. The last thing I saw by the Hughes was The Book of Eli which I really did not like. (If I ever get the time I’d like to rewatch it and write a review on it to maybe understand why I hated it so much.)

The only other thing I’ve seen by them was Menace II Society but I was only 10 or so. So I’m not really sure what to expect, but I like Wahlberg and Russell Crowe is Russell Crowe. So I’ll likely try to catch this one when it opens in January 2013.

OK, this next one could be interesting: Barbara Streisand and Seth Rogen. They’re mother and son and they’re going on an 8-day road trip. The movie is titled The Guilt Trip. Get it?

I didn’t find the trailer all that funny, but I am a huge Seth Rogen fan, and I’m willing to bet this will be as funny as it is touching. Plus Adam Scott is in it. Are we having fun yet?? Opens Christmas Day.

Lastly, in The Wolf of Wall Street Leonardo DiCaprio is working with… wait for it… Martin Scorsese! Bet you didn’t see that coming. It’s about a New York stockbroker who served 20 months in jail for refusing to cooperate in a massive 1990s fraud case.

I’ve never really gotten excited about movies about the financial industry–I’ve yet to see Wall Street, though I did find myself engrossed with Boiler Room a long time ago—but with supporting cast members like Jonah Hill, Matthew McConaughey, Gene Hackman and Jean Dujardin, I’m probably going to be all in on this.
